THE HISTORY OF CROCHET

Not much is known about the beginnings of the art of crochet, but it is believed that the earliest crocheted projects may have been made by using the fingers, rather than 'hooks.' Most early 'hooks' were fashioned out of bone or ivory, and were elaborately carved. It wasn't until books became mass produced that crochet exploded. According to the Craft Yarn Council of America, in 1994, 34 million women crocheted or knitted, a figure that rose to 38 million women in 2002.
